Although the ship doesn't a doctor onboard, she's regularly in sight of land. Should a medical emergency arise, the onboard staff will contact a hospital at the nearest port. In addition, onboard staff is trained in first aid and can provide emergency assistance.

We consider it a priority to have well-qualified tour leaders and guides onboard who coordinate every aspect of the tour and share their knowledge of Greenland and Arctic conditions during shore excursions and onboard lectures.

The average temperature in the summer is approximately 46 degrees Fahrenheit with daylight around the clock. Deep into the fjords, at Kangerlussuaq for example, temperatures can be as high as 71 degrees Fahrenheit.

There is no dress code onboard. Pack comfortable, casual clothes, and a pair of regular shoes or sneakers. To be adequately dressed on shore excursions, you should pack a pair of waterproof hiking boots, waterproof and windproof jacket and pants, a warm hat, a pair of windproof gloves, inner-gloves, two sets of long underwear, a warm sweater, and warm socks. In addition we suggest two or three changes of indoor clothing and a pair of regular shoes to wear onboard ship.

A small backpack for shore excursions is recommended. And since it seldom rains around Greenland during the summer, make sure you pack your sun glasses and tanning lotion. There are limited items for sale in the gift store onboard so you should bring whatever toiletries you might need during the voyage, as well as a supply of any medications you take. If you plan to use any electrical equipment, an adapter and converter are required. In the height of summer, mosquitoes can be abounding, so remember to bring mosquito repellent. Should you suffer from seasickness, don't forget your remedies. And last but not least - binoculars and a camera are a must! (A limited selection of film is sold onboard.)

Some landings are by PolarCirkel boats, and the terrain on shore may be fairly rugged and steep, so you should be reasonably sure-footed and in good physical condition.

The sea surrounding Greenland is home to a number of different species of whales, including the blue whale, fin whale, humpback, minke whale, killer whale, as well as numerous seals. There are over 50 species of birds including the Arctic tern, ptarmigan, black guillemot, kittiwake, Brunnich's guillemot, the raven, as well as four protected species of birds of prey: the snowy owl, white-tailed eagle, peregrine falcon and the gyrfalcon. On land in West Greenland you'll find reindeer and musk ox. There are no forests in Greenland, but approximately 500 different species of plants, of which five are orchids.

Greenland is the largest island in the world, with 85 percent of its area covered with ice that varies in age from 500-100,000 years and that can be more than 9,000 feet thick. Since there are no roads connecting towns and villages in Greenland, snow scooters, dog sleds, airplanes and ships are utilized to get around. Greenland is part of Denmark, but with the introduction of Home Rule in 1979, Greenland has moved towards relative independence based on parliamentary democracy. The 56,000 people living in Greenland are predominantly Inuit. Today fishing is the all-dominating trade and accounts for 95 percent of total exports, but in the hunter districts of the outer areas, the seal and whale catch is of great importance. It actually forms the stable existence for one fifth of the Greenlandic population. For centuries the philosophy has been to live at one with nature. The hunters live with nature and follow the natural seasons.
